Learning to Ring

If you are interested in learning to ring church bells, it is possible to learn the art of change ringing at the Cathedral. A number of our current band have been taught to ring here at the Cathedral.

There are no set requirements for ringers, however, many churches have ringing rooms which are accessible only via a narrow spiral staircase and there may be other obstacle to negotiate such as low roof beams. At the Cathedral the access to the ringing room includes a climb of almost 100 steps together with several low roof beams. It is also usually necessary to stand whilst ringing bells.

As well as providing a service to the Cathedral, ringing can be a very interesting, challenging and rewarding hobby. We expect our ringers to be able to attend ringing most Sunday mornings as well as a practice session on Thursday evening.

Take a look at the section "Teaching a Radio Presenter" for a little more insight.

Ringing is a very sociable activity, and we have a number of links with other ringers, both from local towers as well as further afield. If you are interested in learning to ring and are in easy reach of Rochester Cathedral, then contact the Tower Captain for more information. If you are browsing this site from further afield, the the Tower Captain may be able to help you get in contact with your local tower or ringing association.
